I Am Not My Hair: PRODUCTS

I’m learning so much about natural hair while on the no perm journey. I’ve talked about coloring my hair to hide the gray and I continue to look for a color that doesn’t dry my hair out. If you know of one, please share.

I’ve found that when I color my hair I have a different grade of hair each time. The first time the hair was super hard and dry. The products I used to moisturize it didn’t help much. I found a gel that was perfect and it worked for three colors then decided it wouldn’t work either.

I don't care for the hard dry hair, so I’m always on the moisturizer search, trying new products. Trying new products is not a cheap thing. What I don’t like is buying something and finding out it was a waste of money. I do like the sample products because I’m not spending a ton of money for product if it doesn’t work.

I’ve tried Carol Daughters and I must say I like the product, however the price keeps me from reordering.

I’ve tried Ms. Jessie and Curlz they did nothing for my hair.

I’ve noticed that what works for you might not work for me, which makes it hard to try products because you don’t know what results you’ll get when you put it on your hair.

How is your natural hair journey going? Share your experiences.

LaShaunda,

On my road to natural hair I tend to keep my hair straight. I have not had a relaxer since March. I use Organic Root Stimulator's Olive Oil Creamy Aloe Shampoo. Afterwards, I use Infusium 23 (repair)ologie conditioner to comb thru my hair. Then I I deep condition (once a week) with Organic Root Stimulator's Olive Oil Replenishing Pack. I finish off with Infusium's leave in conditioner.

Since my hair has gotten so kinky at the roots I blow dry it with a ceramic hair dryer on high. But before I do I work about two dime sized drops of Biosilk Silk Therapy through my hair.

I was told to get a Chi Iron but could not see paying $130 for flat irons so I purchased a pair of Remington Flat Irons made of Tourmaline, Ceramic, and Titanium (I think) which is the same material as Chi Irons and the temp gets up to 480 degrees F. I only paid $50 for them.

I have very little breakage and my hair is pretty healthy considering my transition. I have about 2 inches of new growth.

Hope this helps.

LaShaunda,

I can only imagine how frustrating it must be to keep buying products that people rave about and they don't work. I'm personally ready for the big, big chop. I just have to find somebody to cut my hair. :o) I think I have about 4 to 5 inches of new growth and while I'm not a short afro type of gal, I plan put kinky twist in as a protective style shortly after I cut.

As for products - I'm a major PJ. I have bought some of everything. What I love is Yes to Cucumbers Conditioner and Giovanni Direct Leave-in Conditioner.I also really like Ecostyler EVOO gel and ORS Lock and Twist Gel as staple products.

I'm cowashing with Herbal Essences Hello Hydration and Yes to Cucumbers (because I get it Ross for $3.99). Like Makasha I'm using ORS's replinishing pak for my deep condition.

I've made some homemade shea butter and oil mixes for sealing. I'm using lots of oil. I think my hair likes it. I'm not sure yet.

I'm not using any heat on my hair, so no flat irons for me. My hair and heat do not get along. I'm horrified of the potential for heat damage.

I'm not even going to get started with Ms. Jessie's because I'm not paying for it. It's too expensive. I plan to use the cheaper products first and work my way up.

I do have some Shea Moisture products that I like alot, but I think they'll work better when I'm completely natural.

What are you cowashing with Lashaunda? Are you using a leave-in and sealing to keep moisture in?
